Cravings

Hey all... I wanted to see what everyone is doing to avoid their cravings. I don't eat bad and I don't eat too much, I never really have, but when I get stressed I just have to eat sugar.... Does anyone else have emotional cravings and how do you overcome them?

My cravings are always for salty stuff! Try eating a yogurt when you get those cravings. After a few weeks of drinking lots of water and eating right, it should flush your body and start to get rid of your "sugar dependancy". Good luck!

Establish another habbit. Every time you get that craving, eat something else. After a while it will change, but it will take time. Most of us have years of bad habbits that we have to try to overcome... it's not easy, but in the end it will be worth it.

You will feel so much better when you don't give in. As soon as you give in you have a tendancy to rationalize it, and next time it's much easier to give in...

It is great to say just resist, but it isn't quite that easy with those years and years of habits. I deal with the cravings in a different way and eventually it will change the habit. For those sweet tooth cravings I give in to gum and breath mints. Both are sugar free but give you that taste of something sweet without actually having the sugar. If I am home and think I need to eat something I get up and brush my teeth. It changes the taste in my mouth and so you know if you eat chocolate or sweets after that it tastes bad. Changing the habit is what we should do, but it takes time, and a focus on something else to actually make it happen.

I'm going to play the devil's advocate. When you totally avoid something you are craving too long you can go overboard and eat to much of if you do cave in. If you have tried all the good suggestions and still have a craving, just check out the serving size and have only that amount or try a lower fat or sugar free or low sodium version of the same food. It might taste a little different, but after a while you'll get used to it and you'll be healthier for it.
